Xin Rong Ji • Shanghai

Xin Rong Ji was founded in October 1995 by ZHANG Yong in Linhai County, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province. Apart from picturesque two storey wooden houses and granite paved alleys, there is also an ancient wall in Linhai.

Originally over 6 km in length, construction had begun during the Jin Dynasty (265 – 420) and continued into the short-lived Sui Dynasty (581 – 618) and Tang (618 – 907). Portions of the wall still exist including the northern, western, and southern parts along the Lin River.

Zhang Yong was born in Linhai. Thirty-five years ago in 1989, he opened a small eatery with a few tables and noticed that seafood, although locally sourced, were sold frozen to consumers and restaurants alike.

Fresh seafood was equally rare in the markets. The enterprising Zhang hit on the idea of a seafood themed restaurant and converted his small eatery into the first Xin Rong Ji.

From that hometown beginning the group now has more than 40 restaurants – including Rong Ji Beef and Seafood Hotpot, Rong Manor, Small Eatery Rong, and Rong Mansion Banquet – in Taizhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. In 2018, Xin Rong Ji opened its first restaurant outside the Mainland in Hong Kong, and on 28 February 2024 in Akasaka in the heart of Tokyo.

The Xin Rong Ji outlet we are recommending is in the Bund Finance Center. It has an open-kitchen concept, outstanding food, and ravishing views of the Huangpu River.
