Boschendal • Over 340 Years of South African Winemaking Heritage

Boschendal is one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa, located between Franschhoek and Stellenbosch in the Western Cape. This iconic wine farm is nestled in one of the most picturesque valleys in the Cape Winelands.

Founded in 1685, Boschendal’s land was first granted to the French Huguenot Jean le Long by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape Colony. The property was later bought by Abraham de Villiers in 1715 and remained in the De Villiers family for 164 years.

Since then, Boschendal has changed hands several times.

In 2005, DGB (Douglas Green Bellingham) — one of South Africa’s largest independent wine and spirit producers and distributors — acquired the Boschendal wine brand.

In 2018, South African billionaire Tony Tabatznik became the sole shareholder of the Boschendal estate, owning the land and buildings, while DGB continues to own the wine brand and manage wine production.

Simon van der Stel (1639–1712) was the first Governor of the Dutch Cape Colony. He is regarded as one of the founders of South African viticulture. In 1685, Van der Stel granted land to the French Huguenot Jean le Long, an event that marks the beginning of Boschendal.

Boschendal is located in the Cape Winelands, which is just 45–60 minutes east of Cape Town, South Africa. The region is a premier, world-renowned wine-producing and culinary destination known for its spectacular mountain backdrops, historic Cape Dutch architecture, and hundreds of prestigious wine estates.

The estate spans over 2,000 hectares of dramatic mountain slopes, orchards, and vineyards, offering visitors a breathtaking glimpse into the beauty of the Cape Winelands.

Yet Boschendal offers far more than wine. It is a model of responsible farming, committed to regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, and ethical labour practices.

At Boschendal, visitors can enjoy a rich variety of wine, food, and outdoor experiences. Dining options range from the farm-to-table elegance of The Werf to casual wood-fired pizzas at The Deli, while seasonal picnics on the lawn offer a relaxed way to savour fresh estate produce.
