Shunde is a district in the city of Foshan in Guangdong Province and one of the most affluent counties in the whole of China.
Many chefs in Cantonese restaurants in Hong Kong and around the world are from Shunde. Incidentally, Bruce Lee (1940 – 1973) was born in a town in Shunde.
The most acclaimed restaurant there is Zhu Rou Po. Such is its fame food lovers, movie and TV stars, and chefs from around the world continue to make a pilgrimage to the Shunde restaurant.
Zhu Rou Po is actually like a little village. There is a big hall where the main restaurant is situated, outside of which hangs many photographs of famous personalities who have visited, including Hong Kong celebrities.
Private rooms are designed as cottages. Ingredients, including organic vegetables, and seafood are displayed openly for customers to contemplate and choose.
The restaurant is named for owner WU Su Fen who, when young, helped out in her family stall in the wet market selling pork. Hence, the affectionate nickname ‘Aunt Porky’.
From that humble origin, she has become a household name of outstanding, traditional Shunde culinary classics. There are dishes here you will not find elsewhere.
Zhu Rou Po deserves a Nobel Prize for Cuisine.
