Jean-Claude Mas • From 35 Hectares to a Languedoc Wine Empire

In the sun-drenched Languedoc region of southern France, the name Jean-Claude Mas is synonymous with a quiet revolution. Described as a “pioneer from the New Languedoc”, he has, in just over two decades, transformed a 35-hectare family vineyard into a sprawling wine empire boasting 940 hectares of self-owned vines and a further 1,500 hectares under partnership, spanning 17 properties.

Jean-Claude Mas’s story is one of deep-rooted passion. His family has cultivated vines in the Languedoc since 1892, when his great-grandfather, Auguste Mas, purchased a small plot of land. Jean-Claude recalls that at the age of three, during the harvest, he would often slip away from his mother’s watch and run 2.5 kilometres to find his grandfather in the cellar—a moment that would shape his destiny.

But his path was not a straight line. Initially, he pursued a different love: motorsports. After graduating from business school, he worked as an export director for the lubricant brand Motul, channelling his energy into the world of racing. However, wine was his “first love”, and in the early 1990s, he returned to it, spending four formative years working in Bordeaux.

A pivotal moment came in 1992 when he met the legendary Italian winemaker Giorgio Grai. Grai taught him the art of blending, a skill that would become the cornerstone of the “Paul Mas style”.

In 2000, Jean-Claude made a defining decision. After inheriting 35 hectares of vineyards from his father, Paul Mas, he chose not to continue selling the grapes, as his family had done for generations. Instead, he launched Domaines Paul Mas, becoming the first in his family to bottle wine under his own name.

From that moment, he embarked on a remarkable expansion. Through a series of strategic acquisitions, he built a portfolio that now includes Chateau Paul Mas and the globally recognised Arrogant Frog brand. Today, his group produces 25 million bottles annually and exports to almost 80 countries.

Jean-Claude sums up his philosophy with a simple yet powerful idea: “Old World wines with New World attitude.” He has broken the traditional, often intimidating, mould of French wine, making the Languedoc’s finest expressions accessible to the world. Today, 90% of his production is sold outside of France.
