Opus One Chief Winemaker Michael Silacci
Opus One, the renowned Napa Valley estate, has announced that Chief Winemaker Michael Silacci will retire following the completion of the 2026 harvest, bringing his 25-year journey at Opus One to a close.
Silacci joined Opus One in 2001 as Director of Viticulture and Enology, and was appointed the winery’s Chief winemaker in 2003, assuming full responsibility for vineyard management and winemaking. Guided by a holistic philosophy that integrates vineyard and cellar, he has upheld the founding vision of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi – prioritising the expression of place and the pursuit of uncompromising quality.
Under his leadership, Opus One’s vineyards have been strengthened through strategic replanting, the adoption of regenerative farming practices, and strategic land acquisitions. Silacci also championed the protection and restoration of the estate’s land along the Napa River, and implemented sustainable practices including cover crops, no-till methods, and precise, limited irrigation to enhance vine balance.
Opus One has a tradition of thoughtful winemaking succession. The winery will begin its search for Silacci’s successor in early 2027, with Silacci remaining involved during the transition to ensure a smooth handover.

“Michael’s contributions to Opus One are profound and enduring, and we thank him for his years of dedication,” said Chris Lynch, Opus One CEO. “His devotion to the terroir of the Estate, his ability to integrate innovation with tradition, and his leadership across our vineyards and cellar have guided the winery to new heights. While his retirement represents a natural evolution, the foundations he has built will shape Opus One for generations to come.”
